Located approximately 450km south west of Sydney and 725 metres above sea level, Batlow is surrounded by numerous orchards and in recent years has earnt the reputation as one of Australia’s premier producers of apples, pears, cherries, berries and stonefruits. Most famously Batlow is known for the Big Apple. It’s so big that it rises above the trees of the orchard.

Where’s Batlow

Getting There

If driving, Batlow is 443 kms south west of Sydney via the
Hume and Snowy Highways. If coming from Canberra to the East or Albury from the South it is only a 2 hours drive or about 220km via the Hume Hwy.

There is a bus service to Batlow from Wagga Wagga and Tumbaramba. These towns are accessible via all major towns and cities in the region. The Baltow train is currently not running.

Accommodation

Batlow has a hotel, motel and caravan park, which all get busy at certain times of the year. During peak harvest season it should be possible to camp or stay in dorm beds on some farms, but make sure you check with the owner first.

Not Fruit Picking – What to do?

  • The massive Batlow Apple Blossom Festival is on the third weekend in October each year. With thousands flocking to the town for a hige celebration, this is one event not to be missed.
  • Check out the Weemala lookout for an amazing view and the nearby and flora & fauna reserve.
  • If you want to see some snow, take a short drive up to Mount Kosciuszko, where there is great slopes for skiing, snowborading or just tobagganing in the Winter months.

Extending Your Australian Working Holiday Visa

Many harvest jobs will meet the Second Australian Working Holiday Visa eligibility and count towards the 88 days of specified work. Some regional locations and jobs are ineligible which could lead to the Department of Immigration rejecting your application. So remember to confirm whether or not your fruit picking or harvest job will count towards the Second Australian WHV.
