Work With Pears

Pear Picking often requires working long hours, doing repetitious tasks that are physically demanding that may lack excitement and intellectual stimulation. Ladders are often needed to reach pears and in summary there’s a fair amount of carrying and lifting involved. If you’re not a fan of real hard work you can also work in the packing sheds sorting the pears.

Pear Picking Tips

The most successful pickers  develop a consistent and effetive technique . This means sticking it out for the first few days and week while you’re still learning. Obviously if payed per  piece your wage will increase as your ability to pick does. Remember to ask your farmer or hostel owner for handy tips and hints.

Things you’ll need

Work will be in hot conditions so remember to stay cool and hydrated unless you’re working in a Greenhouse.

• Non slip sturdy footwear.
• Long Pants or Shorts
• Long-sleeved shirt
• Broad Brimmed Hat
• Sunscreen

Up North weather can be tropical so be prepared for all sorts!

Pay Information

People new to fruit picking typically take a couple of days to develop their picking technique, during which the pay may not seem so rewarding for the effort. As you progress and perfect your technique you’ll become more and in turn the quantity you pick. When you’re picking more, you’re earning more! Of course if pay is per hour it still rewarding to perfect the art as there’s plenty of pickers that will pick for $15-$20 per hour. Many farms pay  per bin ( LBin is Approximately 400kg pears, a typical amount being $30 per lug. Expect to picking 2-4 bins per day initially and once you master the craft anything from 4-10 bins per days is possible.
