Payment Summary & Group Certificates
At the end of each financial year, employers have to provide employees with a Pay As You Go (PAYG) payment summary. This is often called a group certificate. This is an obligation under tax law, which is enforced by the Australia Taxation Office (ATO).
PAYG Summaries / Group Certificates should have the accumulated amounts for both your gross income and your PAYG tax. Each employer who you have worked during the financial year (July 1st to June 30th) must supply you with a Group Certificate or Payment Summary. It is important to ensure each of these documents have both your Tax File Number and your employer’s ABN stated somewhere.
Can I use my last Pay Slip as a Group Certificate?
In order to lodge your tax return at the end of the financial year (June 30th) you must have your Group Certificate/Payment Summary on hand. If you’re leaving Australia prior to the end of the financial year, you may use your last payslip – given it contains the accumulated amounts for both your gross income and PAYG tax (YTD – year to date).
How can I obtain my group certificate?
You will have to contact you’re employer and request a copy if you don’t have your group certificate at the time of submitting your tax refund.
** From mid July the Tax office will start to pre fill your details which means you may not have to provide the tax agent with actual copies of your group certificate if you verify that the “pre-filled” details are correct.
