My boyfriend and I stayed here for 7 weeks in 2013. Rick advised over the phone there was work so we made our way to Innisfail.
There was NO work. I waited for 2 weeks only to be placed on a farm for one day per week. Rick promised the work was coming but failed to deliver. Working one day per week qualifies as ‘casual’ in Immigrations eyes but Rick advises backpackers that the full week counts. This is completely misleading.
The rent is extremely expensive @ 185 per week and facilities are minimal to poor. The kitchen is filthy, there is no requirement for people to clean up after themselves. Toads and ants are rampant. There were toads cooked in the oven and microwave as ‘fun’, this is the calibre of people staying here.
Rick and Donna are very persuasive and manipulate people into staying at the hostel with false hope.
There is a big drug and alcohol culture being in such an isolated area (almost 2km out of town) and there are no activities run by the the hostel. It is not a nice environment.
Also, when new positions do become available a game of favoritism is played by the owners.
It is not worth your time to go here.
