Fruit Picking Jobs in Australia

Cantaloupe picking is physically demanding repetitious work that can often be dull at times. Harvesting the actual melons, involves cutting them from the stem than transporting the fruits from the field to a vehicle. This often works like a production line where cantaloupes are thrown  from one person to another. Obviously they’re not as heavy as watermelons but if you’re not keen on hard work we suggest you find something a bit easier to harvest

Cantaloupe Picking Tips

The trick to telling if a cantaloupe is ripe is by smelling it. Ripe fruits give off a sweet cantaloupe smell which can’t be mistaken and will appear golden in colour with a outer rind. If the cantaloupe appears to be to soft it may have over ripened. If you have any questions about perfecting your technique ask the other pickers at your working hostel or caravan park or best of all ask your farmer/boss.

Things you’ll need

Work will be in hot conditions so remember to stay cool and hydrated unless you’re working in a Greenhouse.

Did you know?

Cantaloupes derive their name from the papal gardens of Cantaloupe, Italy, where some historians say this species of melon was first grown.

Pay Information

PePay rates are typically per piece, so the more cantaloupe you pick, the more you’re going to earn. This is often measured as a team, so it’s your collective effort that will be assessed. As you perfect your technique you’ll become more efficient and in turn increase the quantity you cut and pick. Hourly pay can range from $15-$20 per hour but per piece pay will vary from farm to farm.
