Situated in the Tropical North East Queensland Tablelands region, Atherton is know for its lakes, waterfalls, tropical rainforest’s and easy pace . It was the first town to be settled in the tablelands and now even has a McDonald’s! Crops in the region include, maize, avocados, citrus, peanuts & potatoes so there should be plenty of work going if your rock up at the right time of year!

Getting There
Atherton is approximately 100km from Cairns, buses run daily from both Cairns and Ravenshoe. If driving the Kennedy Highway is the go and will get you to Cairns via Marreeba. Their is also an aerodrome located in Atherton for flights to the surrounding regions. If anyone flies in they can have a beer on us! Also let us know about the flight!
Accommodation
Atherton has hotels, motels, caravan parks and ofcourse a backpackers hostel which gives you plenty of options depending on budget/preference. Their is also a hospital and along shops and food stores servicing the 8,000 or so local residents.
Not Fruit Picking – What to do?
Fruit picking work aside there’s a few historical museums and wineries to get too. If you have a car there are many options within an hours drive. Get in contact with the guys at the local visitor centre.
Extending Your Australian Working Holiday Visa
Many harvest jobs will meet the Second Australian Working Holiday Visa eligibility and count towards the 88 days of specified work. Some regional locations and jobs are ineligible which could lead to the Department of Immigration rejecting your application. So remember to confirm whether or not your fruit picking or harvest job will count towards the Second Australian WHV.
