Pumpkins are not only purchased for halloween they are consumed year round and are a vigorous, prostrate, annual vine with an extensive root system. In Australia New South Wales has the second largest pumpkin crop with Queensland home to the largest. Temperatures of 20-35 degrees celsius are ideal for maximum production downunder.

Pumpkin Picking Tips

The most important indication to look for, is that the shell has begun to harden. You don’t want to be able to easily indent the pumpkin skin using your fingernail, this means the fruit is still to immature / not ready for harvest. You wan’t to pick the pumpkin when the shell has hardened, you can simply cut it from the vine. If you pick the pumpkin too early it can spoil within days!

Work will be typically be in hot conditions so remember to stay cool and hydrated unless you’re working in a Greenhouse.

Pay Information for Pumpkin Picking

Pay rates will differ from employer to employer, payment can be on an hourly, weekly or fortnightly basis. It is not uncommon for employers to also have a per piece pay agreement, pay will depend on how productive you are.
